Grant Gilbert

About the Artist

Grant Gilbert is a digital artist from the coastline of New Jersey. Grant finds himself largely influenced by the skate and surf community he grew up with. This inspiration finds its way into his design work on his apparel line (Stay Trill Clothing). Grant works mainly through digital collage to explore the internal conflict humans experience. This process relies heavily on collage and the manipulation of different images over layers. Currently at UNH he is obtaining his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with a concentration in design and a Business Administration minor. During the 2021-2022 year Grant was awarded a fellowship position at the Museum of art on Campus, and has been a high honors dean’s list recipient every semester he has been at UNH with a cumulative GPA of 3.69. Grant aims to enter the design world through advertising and branding, ideally working through a creative design firm

“I hope to create an image that evokes an emotion from the viewer and allows them to come to their own conclusion.”

Artist Statement

I look at purgatory not as a physical place with a specific narrative. Instead I see it as an inner dialogue that one has within themselves throughout their life. This continuously evolving conflict may leave some in a hell-bound limbo, while others are able to find their spirit resting in a more divine place.

My work aims to depict those internal struggles and the emotions that surround them. I obtain this by a process that heavily relies on collage and the manipulation of different images over many layers, carving away certain parts of images until I reach a desired result.

The idea that the spirit has to undergo a process or condition to reach a place of purification deeply interests me. Just like ourselves in the physical world, our spirits and consciences have many dilemmas that shape their future by the cost of their actions.

I do not necessarily hold a specific look I want the end result of each image to be. Rather I hope to create an image that evokes an emotion from the viewer and allows them to come to their own conclusion.
